NaNoWriMo!

I think I'm in love... with National Novel Writing Month, also known as NaNoWriMo

NaNoWriMo is an amazing project designed to help participants write a full-length novel in one month. And that month is November!

I'm signed up. I signed up the second I realized what it is. I hope that one day, my library will have a book written my me on its shelves. Even better would be a book written by a G-Star student.

Book club, bullying, cupcakes, and something fun!

Hello Readers!

We started the Book Club, and copies of King of the Screwups were snatched up like hotcakes! We only have 2 left, so if you were on the fence about joining, jump over to our side and stop by the library to sign up. We'll have a fun lunch discussion next month. Be sure to join our Facebook Group too! I posted some interesting discussion topics that I'd like to get some feedback on.

I want to let all students know that if you are getting bullied, or know of someone who is, please, talk to me. G-Star students are great - I have never seen a student getting teased here. But if you are aware of something bad going on, or know of someone who is in emotional distress, talk to me or another administrator here. If you are having trouble, take a few minutes to watch some videos from the It Gets Better Project. And remember, LIFE DOES GET BETTER!

The G-Star GSA is hosting a Rainbow Cupcake Sale this coming Monday, October 11, in honor of National Coming Out Day. Stay tuned to school announcements for details!

Mr. Meringolo forwarded me this cool little drawing site. Try it out! Send a link to your project!

Florida Teens Read books are here!

I had such a great weekend that I do have a minor case of the Monday Blues, but the intensity is offset by the fact that (almost) all of the Florida Teens Read books are in stock and ready to read!

This morning I started reading King of the Screwups by K.L. Going. I also passed it out to a few students who finished their FCAT Diagnostic test early, and they got into it as well. It's about a rich, popular New York City kid, Liam, whose dad, tired of dealing with his "screwup" son, kicks him out. Liam goes to live with his gay glam-rocker uncle in an upstate trailer park. So far, it's funny and smart, and I'm sure it'll only get better.

The G-Star Book Club will be reading King of the Screwups as its first selection. As soon as I have a quick consultation with my student cohort, we'll hold a kickoff meeting and get started! Stay tuned to school announcements for details.

Does anyone really read this? Even if I get no responses, I will still keep it up!

Testing, Reservations, Travel Club & Book Club

Hello all!

Monday again! This week, we have an LTM on Thursday, so don't forget!

Unfortunately, I can't give out any lunch passes now through Wednesday because we have some tests going on in here. Once these tests are out of the way, there should be much more flexibility and openings!

Teachers, be sure to use the Reservation Request form I've sent you. I'm hoping that the form will really streamline library scheduling and be convenient for everyone!

The Travel Club has already had a meeting, but we still need more students to enroll in the trip. This spring, we're going to Spain, Portugal, France, Monaco, Morocco and Gibraltar! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so get on it now! See me or Mr. Alkobey in J-111 for more details.

Our Florida Teens Read books should be in very soon, and we'll be able to get the Book Club started. The first meeting is just a few weeks away. Stay tuned to the school announcements for more info!

Quizzes for Fun

I had another great weekend, and I'm glad to be back for a full week here.

Miss O'Hara shared the BEM SEX ROLE INVENTORY with me, as she is discussing gender identity and role in some of her classes. It is interesting, and will yield some surprising results!  Give it a shot!

Since we're on the topic of quizzes, take a few minutes to figure out your PERSONAL DNA . Great if you are interested in psychology, even as minimally as I am.  It gives you a great visual representation of your personality.

Enjoy, and keep reading!

Short Week, Short Post

I hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day weekend;  I sure did!

There will be no lunch passes for 5th Block tomorrow, September 8 or Friday, September 10.

Also, the Media Center will be closed after school tomorrow so that I can attend the GSA meeting, as I am now the co-chair (along with Mr. Weiss)!  Please join us at 2:45 in Room J-219.

Save $$$

I love Google.  I use gMail, Google Docs and Google Calendar on a daily basis, and would have a much harder time operating the Media Center without all the Google Help.  You should check out what they have to offer.

Anyways, this post is (slightly) more than just a shameless plug for Google.  I'm writing to tell everyone about the beauty that is GOOGLE BOOKS! There are many books that you can read fully online, and many more that you can preview.  Use this resource!  If you're looking for a book that I don't have in the library here, check Google Books.  Many textbooks are also available to read online, too.  Save your dough and find your book here!

If you are low on dough but must buy a book, HALF.COM is a great place to find dirt-cheap used books in decent condition. Remember this when you're in college, eating Ramen Noodles, wondering how you're going to come up with $175 to pay for that pesky geology book.

Online Catalog

"Miss Fuller, can you check to see if you have a book?"

I am always always always happy to help students find books here!  But many of you aren't taking advantage of the amazing technology at your fingertips: our online catalog.  You can look up a library book from any computer with internet, and even search from your iPhone or BlackBerry.

Off to a Great Start

Happy Monday!

The first week back at school went very smoothly for most everyone here.

STUDENTS:
The Media Center is up and running, and LUNCH PASSES are now being issued!  Students can visit before and after school, but must have a lunch pass to come during lunchtime. You can also pop in between classes to pick up a lunch pass, but make sure you have enough time!

You are allowed to use your CELL PHONES before or after school, but you must step outside to use them. If I see a phone in the Media Center during school, I take it! You'll have to pick it up from Mr. Andrepont on your own time. Same goes for HATS.

On that same note of doom, should you decide to enter the Media Center while CHEWING GUM, you get an automatic detention. It's that simple.

The FLORIDA TEENS READ 2010-2011 selections are on display in here, and we have several of those on our shelves now.  The rest will arrive soon, and then we can get the BOOK CLUB underway.

I have been thinking about doing a GAME DAY maybe once or twice a month, where we gather in the Media Center to play Scrabble or Bananagrams.  Any thoughts on that?

SENIOR PRIVILEGE kids:  you are no longer permitted to stay on campus during your empty blocks, so you may no longer spend 7th & 8th Periods here.  Sorry guys!

TEACHERS:
Thanks again for welcoming me into the G-Star family so wholly.  I am very happy to be here and look forward to a wonderful year.

You've been great so far with requesting time via email, so thanks for that!

Please do not send students to the Media Center during class for any reason!  This is a school policy!

We have lots of resources for teachers as well as books and DVDs that may interest you, so don't be shy!

Have a wonderful week!

Welcome to the G-Star Media Center Blog!

Hello G-Star Students, Faculty, Staff & Supporters,

Did everyone have a good/relaxing/adventurous summer? Mine was very productive, and I am incredibly excited to be back at work.  I'm looking forward to the new school year and to being the new Library Media Specialist here at G-Star.

The Media Center Blog will (hopefully) become a hub of reading-centered activity for our school community.
I'd like to encourage users to leave comments and feedback, and let us know what you've been reading!

I've added a new section to our library, albeit a small one: Textbooks.  Students working in the Media Center can refer to them as needed, and even check them out!

The Media Center is now open for business, and I'll see you students on Tuesday!

Be well & keep reading,

Miss Fuller
